Hays serves as the central hub of this northern Montana landscape, where the plains of the Warneke Flat meet the rising elevations of the Little Rocky Mountains. The cultural and spiritual footprint of the area is clearly marked by historical sites such as the Saint Pauls Mission Cem near the entrance to Mission Canyon, along with the Hays Cem and McConnell Cem. This 2020 survey reveals a complex network of drainages and coulees, including Little Peoples Cr and Running Crow Cr, that have carved deep canyons like White Cow Canyon and Bradley Canyon. The southern portion of the map transitions into higher peaks, anchored by Eagle Child Mtn and Indian Peak, while the border between Blaine and Phillips counties cuts across the rugged terrain near Mission Peak.
