Haystack Mtn and the distinctively named China Hat rise above the transition between the San Joaquin Valley and the western Sierra Nevada foothills. This landscape is defined by its seasonal drainage systems, where Black Rascal Cr and Burns Cr carve through the terrain, the latter feeding into Burns Lake in the southeast. These waterways and canyons, including Greaser Gulch and Toledo Gulch, reflect the rugged character of the Mariposa Co and Merced Co border region.
