About this map

Mount McKinley National Park dominates the northern landscape of this survey, its southern boundary cutting across high alpine terrain and the terminal reaches of the Cantwell Glacier. The lower elevations are defined by the critical transportation corridor of the Alaska Railroad, which climbs toward the interior through a series of small trackside stations and utilitarian outposts. Infrastructure supporting this mountain transit includes a CAA Station, an Airstrip, and a Water Tank located near the small settlement at Summit. The topography transitions from the high peaks of the Alaska Range down into the drainage of the Middle Fork Chulitna River, where the landscape is dotted with small lakes like Mirror Lake and Summit Lake. This mid-century view documents the remote rail-and-trail network before modern highway development significantly altered access to the park's southern reaches.
