About this map

Samuel R McKelvie National Forest occupies the northeastern corner of this terrain, where the undulating sandhills of Cherry County give way to broad depressions and seasonal basins. This specific landscape is defined by its namesake Heath Valley and neighboring Cutcomb Valley, which separate the higher dunes from the pocketed wetlands below. The distribution of water is a defining characteristic of this interior region, centered on a chain of distinct basins including Goose Lake, Shaup Lake, and Schoolhouse Lake. While many of these water bodies are isolated, Steer Cr provides a primary drainage corridor moving eastward. Notable topographic features like Trickle Flat and Hutch Jack Flat sit atop the ridges, marking the sparse road network that connects these remote ranching and forest lands.
