The village of Hillman serves as the central hub of this northern Michigan landscape, situated where Brush Creek meets the Thunder Bay River. The area is defined by a high density of glacial lakes and wetlands, ranging from the large expanses of Avalon Lake and Ess Lake in the northwest to the intricate northern reaches of Fletcher Pond at the southern boundary. This aquatic network supported the early development of Montmorency County, with numerous family and location-named roads like Beaver Lake Ln and Long Rapids Rd connecting isolated homesteads to the village core.
