Away from the water, the topography rises sharply toward White Oak Mtn and Freezeland Mtn, where smaller communities like Nimitz and Jumping Branch are situated along the Jumping Branch Valley. Genealogists may find value in the scattered burial sites, including the Lilly-Crews Cem and Meadows Family Cem. Much of the northern river corridor is preserved within the New River Gorge National River, illustrating the intersection of protected wilderness and the established settlements of Brooks and Bellepoint.
