Lake Powell and the winding course of the Dirty Devil River dominate this 1980s landscape at the northern edge of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The settlement of Hite is situated near the confluence where the Dirty Devil joins the Colorado River as it enters Narrow Canyon. This era of the canyon's history is defined by the high water levels of the reservoir, which filled the lower reaches of numerous side canyons including North Wash and Stair Canyon. High desert topography is marked by prominent landmarks such as Trachyte Point and the deep incisions of Big Horn Canyon and Hog Canyon. A remote Landing Strip near the river bank indicates the area's importance as a gateway for backcountry exploration and river access during the late twentieth century.
