The Yampa River valley in Routt County defines the southern landscape of this terrain, where a complex network of irrigation infrastructure supported the high-altitude ranching and agriculture of the early twenty-first century. Water management is central to the area's history, as evidenced by the Gibralter Ditch, Shelton Ditch, and Walker Ditch that skirt the river's edge. Rising to the north, Hooker Mtn serves as a prominent landmark overlooking the many drainage basins of Morgan Cr and Shaefermeyer Cr. These seasonal waterways are punctuated by several storage basins, including Shaefermeyer Reservoir Number 1 and Morgan Cr Reservoir Number 1. Along the middle reaches of these drainages, the Morgan Creek Falls marks a notable natural feature in the gulch-carved topography, which includes Mat Gulch and Jimmy Dunn Gulch.
