Uncompahgre National Forest encompasses much of this high-elevation landscape, where the management of water resources is the primary human imprint. The terrain is characterized by numerous small-scale water storage projects, including Hotchkiss Reservoir, Barnes Mill Reservoir, and ZK Reservoir. These structures, alongside springs like Galloway Spring and Tommy Pond Spring, supported the ranching and agricultural needs of the high country.
