The Puerco River corridor defines this portion of the high desert, serving as the primary geographic axis for transportation and settlement. The community of Houck is situated south of the river, where local routes like St Anselm Rd and Querino Dirt Rd meet the arterial corridor. Further east, the settlement of Allentown sits near the banks of the river, connected by the namesake Allentown Rd. The landscape is carved by seasonal drainages, most notably Black Cr which feeds into the river from the north, and the Whitewater Arroyo system to the east. This 2014 survey documents the modern infrastructure overlaying a traditional landscape, showing how contemporary road networks follow the natural paths established by the river valley's topography.
