About this map

Lake Superior dominates the landscape of this North Shore survey, where the rugged terrain of the Grand Portage State Forest meets the water at the settlement of Hovland. The community is situated at the mouth of the Flute Reed River, which winds through the hills before emptying into Chicago Bay. This 1960 field check reveals a shoreline shaped by both natural harbors and early industrial activity, including several Gravel Pits and a Gravel Pit located near Horseshoe Bay and Big Bay. Local history is anchored by the Cem just west of the main settlement along highway 61. The map captures the transition of the northern woods into the vast expanse of the lake, noting soundings and hydrographic data compiled from the U.S. Lake Survey.
