About this map

The Pigeon River serves as the international boundary between the United States and Canada in this northern stretch of Cook County, surveyed just before the 1960s. Much of the landscape is dominated by the dense woodlands of the Grand Portage State Forest, characterized by complex water systems including the Swamp River and a network of isolated lakes such as Moosehorn Lake, Stevens Lake, and Otter Lake. The terrain rises toward the southern edge of the sheet, where the Hovland Lookout Tower once stood as a sentry over the forest near the summit of Farquhar Peak.
