About this map

Number Nine Lake and Presque Isle Lake sit at the center of this 1975 orthophotoquad, which uses aerial imagery to document the dense forests of Aroostook County. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of several drainages, most notably the East Branch Presque Isle Stream and West Branch Presque Isle Stream. These waterways wind through a series of peaks that dominate the horizon, including Saddleback Mountain and Number Nine Mountain. Further south, Maple Mountain and Meduxnekeag Mountain mark the transition toward the Meduxnekeag River watershed. Unlike traditional topographic maps, this imagery-based survey captures the exact texture of the timberlands and the precise location of logging roads and water features like Howe Brook and Burnt Land Brook as they appeared in the mid-1970s.
