The irregular shoreline reached by several rural routes including Woodruff Rd and Pulliam Rd marks the modern geography of the region. Despite the large-scale changes brought by the reservoir, older patterns of settlement remain visible in the surrounding uplands.

Small communities like Messer and Virgil are documented alongside vital family history sites such as Messer Cem and Dixon Chapel Cem. Numerous drainage systems like Turnbull Cr, Miller Cr, and the north and south forks of Holly Creek define the local topography.
