The San Rafael Swell dominates this portion of Emery County, Utah, where a complex network of canyons and geological formations defines the desert landscape. The eastern edge of the swell is marked by the sharp upturn of the San Rafael Reef, a barrier cut by drainage systems like Cistern Canyon and Stinking Spring Cr. These watercourses eventually join the larger Muddy Cr, which carves through narrow passages like The Chute and opens into wider basins such as The Pasture.
