About this map

The Nolichucky River and North Toe River carve through the high elevations of the Unaka Mountains in this 2016 survey of the North Carolina-Tennessee border. This region, defined by the meeting of the Cherokee National Forest and Pisgah National Forest, centers on small riverside and mountain communities like Huntdale, Poplar, and the aptly named Relief. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail traverses the northern heights, passing over Beauty Spot and through Indian Grave Gap. Genealogists may find interest in the Worrick Cem near Whiteoak Flats, as well as numerous family-named topographic features such as Julius Knob and Peterson Ridge. The landscape reflects a legacy of timber and riverside settlement, with winding routes like State Hwy 197 following the river valleys and connecting isolated settlements like Sioux and Tipton Hill.
