Hunter Peak stands as a prominent high point within the Shoshone National Forest, overlooking a complex system of drainage and alpine terrain. This area of the Absaroka Range is defined by the deep incisions of the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River and its numerous tributaries, including the substantial Crandall Creek and its northern fork. The topography is dominated by massive landforms like Hurricane Mesa, where the high plateau gives way to steep slopes and narrow gulches such as Oliver Gulch.
