Mining operations and rugged foothills characterize this landscape near the border of the Mariposa and Merced county lines. The area is marked by a dense concentration of historical workings, including the Great Northern Mine, Pocahontas Mine, and Klondike Mine, which follow the gold-bearing veins through the western Sierra Nevada. These industrial sites are interspersed with small foothill settlements such as Ganns and Preston, while the White Rock Cem and White Rock Fire Control Sta serve as central community and administrative landmarks for the drainage basin.
