The high desert landscape of Joshua Tree National Monument dominates this survey, revealing a network of early cattle ranching and mining infrastructure. Cattlemen and homesteaders utilized the complex geology of the Wonderland of Rocks to create essential water catchments like Barker Dam and Cow Camp Dam. These water sources supported remote outposts such as Keys Ranch and provided the necessary resources for industrial sites further south and east.

Evidence of early 20th-century industry is scattered across the terrain, from the Lang Mine in Johnny Lang Canyon to the Wall Street Mill near Queen Valley.
