Mullett Lake and Burt Lake dominate the northern Michigan landscape, connected by the channel of the Indian River. Along the western shores of Mullett Lake, a string of lakeside communities including Topinabee, Giauque Beach, and Royal Oak Beach follow the path of the N Straits Hwy. The settlement of Indian River serves as a central hub, situated near the Lake Marina and the Oak Hill Cem. Farther east, the terrain rises toward Blats Hill and is drained by the Pigeon River and Little Pigeon River. The presence of the Calvin Campbell Municipal Airport and the established network of roads like the Torinabee Mail Route reflect the area's development as a regional destination for recreation and transport in the early twenty-first century.
