The Preston School of Industry dominates the northern landscape of this Amador County region, its grounds and Preston Reservoir situated just north of the Ione town site. The area is a complex network of industrial and agricultural activity, where the Southern Pacific and Amador Central railroads converge to serve the local economy. Clay extraction is a defining characteristic of the terrain, with numerous Claypits and the settlement of Firebrick indicating the importance of mineral resources in Ione Valley.

To the south, the expansion of the Camanche Reservoir begins to alter the geography of Jackson Valley, with blue hatching indicating areas subject to submergence. Smaller, potentially vanished locales like The Chemisal and Dagon appear alongside family-named landmarks such as Dutschke Hill and Newman Hill. The presence of the Amador Canal and various tailings piles further illustrates the long-standing manipulation of the landscape for water management and mining, including the Newton Mine near Sunnybrook.
