1968 Map of Irish Butte

About this map

The Slim Buttes rise sharply from the prairie in this Harding County landscape, creating a high-relief boundary within the Custer National Forest. The map documents a sparsely populated ranching territory during the late 1960s, defined by isolated landmarks like Mountain Ranch and Laflin Ranch that were dependent on critical water sources such as Fish Spring and Uncle Ned Spring. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the Moreau River meanders through the plains, joined by the North Fork Cowboy Creek. This era of rural South Dakota life is reflected in the presence of the Goyett Sch and the winding Rimrock Trail, which follows the high ridges of the buttes. The topography is dominated by distinctive geologic formations, including Irish Butte and the paired heights of Adam and Eve Butte.
