Red Earth Cr winds through the central and southern portions of this landscape on the border of Ziebach and Dewey counties. This 2015 survey reveals a terrain defined primarily by its natural drainage patterns and the rectangular grid of the Public Land Survey System, including sections of t16n r21e and t15n r22e. The geography is sparsely developed, centered around water sources like Meadow Cr and the small Jewitt Pond in the southwest. A network of rural routes, such as CR-1 and CR-2a, provides the only structural evidence of human navigation across these prairies, tracing the section lines that have dictated land use in this part of South Dakota for generations.
