Copper Basin defines the industrial and topographic character of this landscape along the Tennessee and North Carolina border. The industrial legacy is visible in landmarks like the London Mills Tailings Pond, City Services Renton Pond, and Gypsum Pond, which cluster near the settlements of Ducktown and Isabella. This region, where the Cherokee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest meet, is dotted with numerous small family and community burial grounds, including Neal Chapel Cem, Threewit Cem, and the Freeland Town Cem. The terrain is marked by significant gaps and knobs, such as Angelico Gap and Stansbury Gap, which historically channeled movement between the mountain communities. Higher elevations like Shinbone Mtn and Franklin Mtn overlook a network of creeks and small settlements like Reesetown and Burger Town.
