The John Day River winds through the southwestern section of this Grant County landscape, accompanied by a dense network of mountain drainages and high-elevation springs. The terrain is defined by its deep gulches and draws, including Eureka Gulch and Cline Draw, which carry seasonal runoff from the surrounding peaks into the river valley. Much of the eastern and southern portions of the map fall within the Malheur National Forest, where the land rises sharply toward timbered ridges.
