Island Butte rises as a prominent landmark in the southwestern corner of Montana, anchoring a landscape defined by the drainage systems of the Beaverhead National Forest. This high-altitude terrain is carved by numerous watercourses, including the split paths of N Fork Alkali Cr and S Fork Alkali Cr, which converge as they flow toward the surrounding basins. The area’s rugged character is underscored by the presence of Porcupine Canyon and the high-elevation basin of Coyote Lake. A network of unpaved forest and range roads, such as Medicine Lodge Rd and Meadow Creek RD, provides access to this remote interior, tracing the paths established by early ranching and forestry efforts in Beaverhead County.
