The South Fork Payette River cuts through the northern reaches of this mountainous section of the Boise National Forest, carving a deep corridor followed by the Idaho City-Stanley SH 21. This high-elevation landscape is defined by its drainage systems and prominent peaks, including Archie Mtn and Wolf Mtn. The Jackson Peak Lookout stands atop Jackson Peak, providing a historical vantage point over the surrounding basins of Pikes Fork and the Crooked River. To the south, Jennie Lake serves as a significant alpine feature among the headwaters of numerous creeks. The network of forest roads and trails, such as the Jackson Peak Spring Road, reveals the accessibility of these remote ridges and gulches, including Willis Gulch and Trappers Flat, for late twentieth-century forest management and recreation.
