Located at the intersection of Platte, Converse, and Niobrara counties, the area is characterized by a network of drainage systems like Muddy Cr and Cottonwood Cr that feed into the reservoir basin. The eastern topography rises toward distinctive landmarks including Sentinel Rock and the high spine of Rattlesnake Ridge.

Evidence of early water management and ranching infrastructure is visible in the presence of Muddy Reservoir Number 1 and isolated water sources such as Jewel Spring and Buck Camp Spring. The southern reaches of the map transitions into more broken terrain, where Morris Canyon and Narrows Bluff define the approach to the Red Hills.
