Jonesville and the surrounding tri-state wilderness of the Cumberland Plateau appear here just as the late 19th-century regional identity was hardening. This survey, conducted under director J.W. Powell, traces the complex drainage patterns of the Powell River and Cumberland River across a landscape dominated by parallel ridges. The map illustrates early Appalachian settlement patterns, where communities like Mt Pleasant and Sneedville were established in the rare level ground of valleys such as Puncheon Camp Valley and Dry Valley.
