Kaho'olawe island’s eastern coastline is defined by dramatic elevation changes and a series of prominent headlands and bays. The landscape is dominated by volcanic summits such as Luamakika and Pu'u 'O Moa'ula Nui, which overlook a terrain carved by deep erosion features including Papaka Iki Gulch and Big Gulch. Along the shore, the steep cliffs of Pali 'O Kalapakea drop toward the Pacific Ocean, framing the large indentation of Kanapou Bay.
