Finland State Forest and the Superior National Forest define this pocket of Lake County, where the upper reaches of the Cloquet River and Langley River carve through a landscape of wetlands and timber. The industrial character of the region is anchored by the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railroad, which snakes through the northeast corner past Norshor Junction. This rail line was vital for moving Minnesota's iron ore from the Range toward the Great Lakes ports.

Small clusters of activity appear at McNair and around a series of named water bodies, including Kane Lake, Marble Lake, and Christianson Lake. The presence of a Heliport and several Gravel Pit sites near the National Forest Boundary reflects the management of these public lands for resource extraction and fire protection during the early 1980s. Local drainage is dominated by numerous small tributaries like Sullivan Creek and Trappers Creek, which feed into the larger river systems.
