About this map

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument dominates the eastern portion of this Maine landscape, protecting a significant stretch of the Wassataquoik Stream and its tributaries. The terrain is defined by the high elevations of the Turner Mountains, including North Turner Mtn, East Turner Mtn, and South Turner Mtn, which rise sharply above a dense network of water bodies. Large basins like Katahdin Lake and smaller features such as Sandy Stream Pond and Twin Ponds are fed by numerous brooks, including Avalanche Brook and Otter Brook. This 2024 survey captures the recreational infrastructure of the region, showing the path of the International Appalachian Trl as it winds toward Barnard Mtn, alongside access routes like Roaring Brook Rd. The map illustrates the convergence of protected wilderness and the historic water systems of the Maine woods.
