Picket Corral Ranch sits within a complex network of high mesas and deep drainages on the border of Mesa and Montrose counties. This area of the Uncompahgre National Forest is defined by its dramatic topographic steps, from Kelso Mesa in the north down to the North Love Mesa Bench and South Love Mesa Bench. Water is central to the landscape's structure, with the Escalante Creek and its many branches—including the Middle Fork and East Fork—carving through the plateau.
