Sterling and the Funny River community occupy this stretch of the Kenai Peninsula, where residential developments meet the sprawling federal protected lands of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the Kenai River and the expansive Kenai Wilderness (Andrew Simons Unit) to the southeast. In the northern sections, a dense grid of local roads like Edgington Road, Reger Road, and Tachick Avenue illustrates the modern settlement patterns outside the refuge boundaries.
