Zuni Mountains topography dominates this section of the Cibola National Forest, where the Continental Divide winds through a high-altitude landscape of ridges and deep canyons. The terrain is marked by significant natural landmarks such as Oso Ridge and the Lookout Mountain Rim, which overlook a complex drainage system including Cottonwood Cr and Bluewater Cr. Sparse but vital water sources like Wells Spring, Muerto Spring, and the Lookout Mountain Stock Tank underscore the arid character of this high-country environment. Unusual geological formations are highlighted by The Notches, including the specific Big Notch and Little Notch passes. This area, largely managed for timber and conservation, is accessed via routes like Forest Rd 50, which traverses the valleys between Lookout Mtn and the numerous namesake canyons like Kettner Canyon.
