Kimberly serves as the focal point of this Wheeler County landscape, situated at the confluence of the John Day River and the North Fork John Day River. The geography is defined by high ridges and narrow canyons, including West Bologna Canyon and East Bologna Canyon, where seasonal drainages flow toward the river valley. To the north, the terrain rises toward the timbered slopes of Umatilla National Forest, which contains landmarks such as Tamarack Mtn and Little Tamarack Mtn.
