About this map

Big Bend National Park dominates the northeastern corner of this rugged borderland survey, where the international boundary follows the winding course of the Rio Grande. The landscape is defined by the massive uplift of Mesa de Anguila, a high limestone plateau that drops precipitously toward the river. Historically significant for its extreme isolation, this segment of the Chihuahuan Desert shows the difficult terrain encountered by early boundary surveyors and modern travelers alike. A single primitive path, the Mesa De Anguila Trl, provides the only named overland access through this section of the park, tracing the high ground above the canyon walls. The map meticulously records the intersection of the United States and Mexico border at the river's centerline, illustrating the natural barrier created by the river as it carves through the mesa.
