The Coteau des Prairies upland plateau dominates this portion of Lake County, defining a landscape of glacial depressions and prairie water bodies. Lake Herman and its adjacent Herman Slough serve as central landmarks just west of the expanding city of Madison. This survey captures the transition from the organized street grid of the county seat, including 7th St SW, to the rural agricultural sections and township lines of the surrounding prairie.

The small community of Orland is situated to the south, surrounded by a network of section-line roads such as Co Hwy 52 and 451st Ave. The hydrology of the region is notably characterized by numerous sloughs and seasonal drainages, including Reynolds Slough and the headwaters of N Buffalo Cr, illustrating the typical wetland patterns of the eastern South Dakota plains before modern intensive drainage.
