About this map

The northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula is captured here in 1949, where the settlement of Copper Harbor sits tucked between Lake Superior and the waters of Lake Fanny Hooe. This survey illustrates a landscape defined by sharp elevation changes, from the coastal Shore Drive to the winding heights of Brockway Mountain Drive and the prominent Mount Houghton. The map documents early post-war recreation and preservation efforts at Ft Wilkins State Park, Hebard State Park, and the Keweenaw County Park. Significant inland water bodies like the large Lake Medora and the smaller Lake Manganese feed complex drainage systems including French Annie Creek and the Montreal River. To the south, the terrain descends toward the protected waters of Bete Grise Bay and the small coastal landing at Bete Grise, near the northern edge of Lac La Belle.
