The northern Sandhills of Holt County appear as a complex network of wetlands and intermittent water bodies in this 2017 survey. The landscape is defined by its drainage patterns, most notably the winding course of Dry Cr in the northern sections. This area of Nebraska is characterized by a high water table and numerous small lakes and marshes, which dictated the placement of the section-line road grid.
