About this map

The southeastern coastline of Lāna'i meets the expansive Pacific Ocean in this coastal survey, where steep terrain drops toward the Kealaikahiki Channel. Coastal settlements and points of interest are clustered along a narrow margin between the highland gulches and the sea, including the historic fishpond site at Loko Lōpā. Local geography is defined by a series of dramatic erosional features like Lōpā Gulch and Kapua Gulch that terminate near the shore. Small coastal landings and named locales such as Makaiwa, Kapua, and Naha suggest a long-standing human presence oriented toward the water. From the sandy stretches of Halepalaoa Beach down to Kīkoa Point, the map documents a landscape where the traditional Hawaiian relationship between land and sea remains clearly etched into the place names of the island's leeward side.
