Fort Selden and the neighboring community of Radium Springs occupy a strategic bend in the Rio Grande where the Rincon Valley meets the northern reaches of the Mesilla Valley. This 2017 study illustrates the complex relationship between the desert highlands and the irrigated valley floor, featuring water management infrastructure such as the Selden Drain and the American Bend Lateral. The terrain is dominated by the massive profile of the Robledo Mountains, including the prominent Robledo Mtn and Lookout Peak, which overlook several drainage systems like Apache Canyon and Foster Canyon.
