Clinch Mountain dominates the topography of this East Tennessee landscape, creating a formidable barrier between the remote valleys of Hancock and Hawkins counties. This 1935 advance sheet, produced by the Tennessee Valley Authority, reveals a deeply rural ridge-and-valley settlement pattern where life centered on small mountain gaps and creek-side schools. Travel was restricted to narrow corridors like State Highway No 66, which threaded through Big War Gap to connect the community of Lee Valley with the surrounding ridges. Many of these settlements, such as Murrell Town and Klondike, were defined by their proximity to local institutions like Richardsons Creek School or War Creek Ch. The map captures the intricate drainage network of the Big War Creek watershed before mid-century modernization altered the infrastructure of the Southern Appalachians.
