Lemmon straddles the high plains of the North Dakota-South Dakota border, serving as a vital rail hub during the mid-1970s. The town's grid is bisected by the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific railroad, which provided the primary industrial artery for this agricultural region. Just north of the state line, North Lemmon appears as a smaller settlement clustered near the North Lemmon Sch.

The landscape is dotted with small-scale resource extraction, including various Gravel Pits, a Scoria Pit, and a Claypit, reflecting the local geology of the Trail and Flat Creek regions. Local community landmarks are clearly marked, from the Green Hill Cem on the outskirts of town to the Drive-in Theater located west of the main settlement. To the southeast, the drainage of Thunder Hawk Creek cuts through the prairie, marking the transition into Lincoln township.
