The high backcountry of Yellowstone National Park is defined here by the vast Pitchstone Plateau and the interconnected water systems of the Snake River drainage. Large alpine lakes dominate the landscape, with Shoshone Lake to the north and Lewis Lake to the southeast. Connecting these bodies of water is the Lewis River, which carries the outflow south toward the namesake Lewis Falls.
