About this map

Upper Geyser Basin serves as the focal point for this early turn-of-the-century study of the hydrothermal systems in northwestern Wyoming. Recorded by Charles D. Walcott and his survey team, the map captures the early infrastructure of the park, most notably the Old Faithful Hotel situated near a dense concentration of thermal features including Splendid Geyser, Giant Geyser, and Beehive Geyser. The drainage systems of the Lewis River and Shoshone Creek dominate the central landscape, moving water through Shoshone Lake and Lewis Lake. To the east, the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake is mapped alongside landmarks like Carrington Island and the Heart Lake Geyser Basin. This era is defined by the transition of land management, shown through the overlapping boundaries of the Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone Park Forest Reserve, and the Teton Forest Reserve near the Uinta Co. line.
