The Great Sand Dunes National Monument dominates the southwestern portion of this 1960s landscape, where the shifting Sand Dunes meet the steep western face of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. To the north, the small settlements of Duncan and Liberty sit at the mountain fringe, connected by a network of Jeep Trails and a Pack Trail that lead into the Rio Grande National Forest.

Resource extraction and early land claims are evident in the presence of a Mine and Prospect near the northern boundary, as well as the large land grant labeled Baca No 4. The map marks a distinct transition from the high desert floor to high-altitude canyons like Slide Rock Canyon and Sawmill Canyon, with numerous drainage systems such as Luis Maria Creek and Medano Creek flowing toward the dunes. A lone Grave near the mountain base provides a quiet record of the individuals who once occupied this isolated frontier.
