The Pine Hills dominate the northwest corner of this Custer County landscape, characterized by a complex network of ephemeral drainages and ridgelines. Surveyed in the late 1960s, the terrain is defined by the branching systems of Strevell Creek, including its northern tributary, North Strevell Creek, which cut across the central and southern portions of the quadrangle. To the northeast, the land is etched by Laney Creek and South Laney Creek, illustrating the natural water management of this ranching country.
