The Bear Springs Hills dominate this high-plains landscape in Las Animas County, where a complex network of seasonal drainages defines the local topography. Water management in this arid ranching environment is evidenced by the presence of the J B Windmill, a critical piece of infrastructure for local land use. The drainage system is heavily articulated by the convergences of West Bear Springs Arroyo, Middle Bear Springs Arroyo, and East Bear Springs Arroyo, which channel runoff across the northern reaches of the quadrangle. To the south, the terrain rises toward the Big Arroyo Hills and is bisected by the winding course of the Lockwood Arroyo. This 2010 survey illustrates the sparse but deliberate road network that navigates between these ephemeral watercourses and upland ridges.
