About this map

The Reed Gold Mine (Historic Site) stands as a focal point in this 1980s-era landscape, marking the grounds of the first documented gold find in the United States. Located near the confluence of Meadow Creek and Little Meadow Creek, the site anchors a region characterized by small rural settlements and a dense network of country churches. The winding Rocky River carves the western boundary, while the towns of Locust and Stanfield are situated in the southern portion of the quadrangle along the rail corridor. The transition from the rugged drainage of Dutch Buffalo Creek to the level terrain of the Flat Woods illustrates the varied Piedmont topography. Local industry and history are further represented by Barriers Mill and several long-standing congregations including St Martins Ch, Rocky Ridge Ch, and Meadow Creek Ch, which reflect the established community roots across the Stanly and Cabarrus county lines.
